The Pump and Run is truly a unique event. Participants can choose between the following events/categories: 1) Run/Walk the 5K only 2) Run/Walk and bench press (Full Pump and Run) 3) Bench press only 4) OPTIONAL -
Enter the Clydesdale division if you are a male over 185 pounds AND 30 OR OLDER (new in 2005) to compete with those weighing
185 or more only
The concept is really simple. People can deduct time from their 5K by how many bench press repetitions
completed. Why? To add variety to the old 5K and to offer those of us who are a bit slower but maybe stronger than the fleet
of foot that always win at the local races.
LIFTING GUIDELINES
Men 39 and under contestants will bench press 100% of their weight. Men 40 - 49 will bench press 90% of their weight.
Men 50 - 59 will bench press 80% of their weight. Men 60 - 69 will bench press 70% of their weight. Men 70 and over will bench
press 60% of their weight.
Women 39 and under contestants will bench press 70% of their weight. Women 40 - 49
will bench press 60% of their weight. Women 50 - 59 will bench press 50% of their weight. Women 60 - 69 will bench press 40%
of their weight. Women 70 and over will bench press 40% of their weight. Minimum lift 45 pounds.
We weigh you before
you lift. Yes, you can strip to your shorts if you really think it will help!
For every bench press repetition
you get 15 seconds off your 5K in the results. For example: you run a 20:00 5K and bench pressed a total of 4 times (one minute
total). For the awards and in the final results your time will be listed as 19:00 minutes. Changes things up doesn't it?
Don't think you want to lift because you might embarrass yourself? We have people bury the bar in their chest and
we have people lift 40+ times. Give it a try!
This is a competitive event and the race director has formal lifting
competition experience, so we do try to maintain solid standards in the bench press with form. But ESPN will not be holding
any strongman competitions here soon so we do our best to ensure uniformity in the lifting despite some complaints.
MAKE SURE AND GO TO MILLENIUM THERAPY AND HEALTH CLUB, (5TH AND WASHINGTON) TO LIFT ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. SATURDAY
LIFTING WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE SCHOOL COMMONS. START IS AT THE SCHOOL.
