Why Study Your Metabolism?
|
|
|
At
the most basic level, your metabolism is how your body converts the
food you consume into usable energy. That energy is then used
for basic bodily functions such as breathing, digestion, and muscle
tissue repair, and for the physical activity you engage in on a daily
basis.
The
fuel your body needs for basic human functions and physical activity
comes from the calories (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates) you
consume each day. Any excess calories are then stored in your body, among which fat
is the most visible to the human eye. The fuel (calories) you
consume is then burned off via physical activity and resting
metabolism- basic functions of the body needed for your survival (mentioned
above). The amount of physical activity (i.e. exercise
intensity and duration, and/or daily work) you engage in is at
your discretion, and commands a mere 10% of your total caloric
expenditure. Your resting metabolism, on the other hand, requires
between 60%-70% of your daily caloric intake. Training your
resting metabolism to operate at a more efficient level (i.e. burn
more calories from fat) is the main objective of a New Leaf Active
Metabolic TrainingSM Assessment.
Learning
about your metabolism and how it functions will allow you to create a
nutrition and fitness program that addresses your body's specific
needs. You will know precisely how many calories you need to
consume each day, how intensely and often you should exercise, and
what type of physical activity you should engage in. Knowing
these things and how they effect your body will give you everything
you need to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and achieve your weight loss
and/or performance goals. No more calorie equations and
mathematical formulas for you to calculate. No
more online exercise recommendations that either work you
too hard or not hard enough. A New Leaf Active
Metabolic TrainingSM Assessment administered by Trekman
Wellness will produce information that works for you
and your body, leading
to the results that you
desire.

Because
a metabolic assessment is based on both reliability and precision,
you will learn very valuable information to assist you on the
path to wellness. Specifically, you will:
- Discover
accurate heart rate zones to train your body to be aerobically
efficient.
- Learn
how to monitor your body's adaptation to training.
- Ensure
that you are exercising at the correct intensity
level to prevent injuries and improve your athletic
performance.
- Have
the ability to modify your training program as you improve and

Your Metabolic Assessment
|
|
|
The
New Leaf Active Metabolic TrainingSM System uses
technology and a testing methodology focused on accuracy
and precision. While some systems measure only the amount of
oxygen in your breath, a New Leaf metabolic assessment
monitors your oxygen and
carbon dioxide levels. Doing so provides a more
comprehensive evaluation of how your metabolism is working, and
how efficiently it is burning calories from various fuel
sources. You will know exactly when your body is burning
calories from energy-dense fat, allowing you to exercise more
efficiently, leading to lost weight and/or increased athletic
performance.
Assessment
Overview
When
you arrive for your assessment you receive a
drawstring bag that contains everything you need for your testing
session. The testing kit is yours to keep, and will be used if
you choose to schedule any reassessments. Inside is your
personal breathing mask, the device that is worn to
measure your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during the
assessment. The bag also includes the air flow sensors to
be used during your assessment, and a small pamphlet explaining the
benefits of metabolic testing. Although Trekman recommends
taking advantage of both, there are two types of metabolic
assessments you can choose from: Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and
Exercise Metabolic Rate (EMR). Both the RMR and the EMR
assessment utilize the same measurement system and technology, and a
detailed explanation of each can be found below.
Resting
Metabolic Rate (RMR)
Remember
your resting metabolism? Measuring that number is the
purpose of an RMR assessment. Learning your resting
metabolic rate is a very easy process. All you need to do
is slip on your breathing mask and a heart rate monitor, and
recline in a comfortable anti-gravity chair for 10-25 minutes.
As you sit and relax, the New Leaf system does all the work for
you, measuring the contents of your breath and your
resting heart rate. Although learning your RMR
is quite simple, there are a few things you should know in
order to make your results as accurate as possible:
- A
minimum 12 hour fast is required for this assessment.
- You
should avoid heavy physical activity for a minimum of 24 hours
(48 hours for greater reliability) before your testing
session. This means you should not
exercise the day before your assessment.
- Although
you want to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible, it is
important that you do
not fall asleep.
Once your assessment is
completed, you will have instant access to your RMR
report on the eNewLeaf website. The results of your RMR assessment
are explained in the next section of this email, entitled Your Assessment, Your Results
Exercise
Metabolic Rate (EMR)
An EMR
assessment will measure your metabolism as you exercise. While
wearing the mask you receive on the day of your assessment and a
heart rate monitor, you will walk or jog on a treadmill for 10-15
minutes at an increasing intensity level. In some cases a
stationary bike or elliptical may be used. As you exercise, the
New Leave Active Metabolic TrainingSM System will
measure your breath and heart rate, and reveal how many calories you
burn during physical activity. You will also learn from what
fuel sources those burned calories originate from (i.e. fat or
carbohydrates). Although an EMR assessment is not
very strenuous or time consuming, there are a
few things you should keep in mind that will lead to a
safe, accurate assessment:
- A minimum 3-4 hour fast is required for
this assessment.
- You should avoid heavy physical activity
for a minimum of 24 hours (48 hours for greater reliability)
before your assessment. This means you should not exercise
the day before your testing session.
- The most intense level of the assessment
will be at your Anaerobic Threshold (AT). At this point it
will feel like you are working pretty hard. If you begin
to feel extreme discomfort or pain, it is important that you let
the technician know as
soon as possible.
Once your
assessment is completed, you will have instant access to
your EMR report on the eNewLeaf
website. The results of your EMR Assessment are explained in
the next section of this email, entitled Your Assessment, Your Results.

Your
Assessment, Your Results
|
|
|
Immediately following your assessment(s) you will have
instant access to your results via the eNewLeaf website. Presented in an easy to read
format, this online portal displays all the information you
need to achieve your weight loss and/or performance goals.
Resting
Metabolic Rate (RMR)
By
simply relaxing and breathing into your mask for 10-15 minutes,
you will have given the New Leaf Active Metabolic TrainingSM System
everything it needs to provide you with meaningful knowledge about
your your resting metabolic rate (RMR). You
will learn exactly how many calories you need each day for
the basic bodily functions discussed earlier. In other words,
you will know the minimum
number of calories you should consume each day.
Why is knowing
your RMR so important? Understanding your RMR
allows you to maintain a healthy metabolism, and avoid entering a
catabolic state, more commonly known as "starvation
mode." When your body senses that you have consumed fewer
calories than your RMR requires, it begins to burn calories found in
muscle mass rather than fat tissue. Doing so slows your
metabolism even further, making it harder for you to lose weight
and see results.
After multiplying
your RMR by a factor based on the average amount of
physical activity you engage in throughout the week, you will also
learn your total caloric expenditure. This is the total number
of calories you burn on a daily basis, from
both resting metabolism and physical activity (exercise,
daily work, etc.). By combining your total daily caloric needs
with your RMR, you will learn the ideal range of calories you should
consume each day.
Your goal then
becomes to consume enough nutrient-dense calories to stay above your
RMR, but below your total daily caloric needs. Doing so allows
you to lose weight safely and effectively, while maintaining a
healthy metabolism.
An RMR
assessment does more than just reveal how many calories you burn at
rest. It also shows you from what fuel sources those calories originate
from. Each person's body has a different predisposition to
burn calories from either protein, fat, or carbohydrates. By
knowing your body's tendencies to use a specific source of fuel, you
will be able to train it to operate more efficiently, burning
more calories from fat, and less calories from protein or
carbohydrates.
Exercise
Metabolic Rate (EMR)
Once you have
completed your EMR assessment, you will have all the information you
need in order to craft an exercise program that makes sure you are
training at the correct intensity level, allowing you to achieve
your goals in a healthy manner and avoid the potential for
injury. Put differently, you can begin to "train smarter,
not harder."
By measuring
both your metabolism and heart rate, the New Leaf Active Metabolic
TrainingSM System will reveal the optimal
"zones" for safe, efficient, and effective physical
training. Displayed in the example below, there are 5
zones total, and each is created when your heart rate reaches a
pre-specified value. Each zone entails a different
component of your Metabolic Profile (Aerobic Base, VO2
max, Anaerobic Threshold).

Zones 1-2 focus
primarily on building your Aerobic Base, the area in which your body
burns calories from energy-dense fat rather than
carbohydrates. Training at this level not only increases your
fat burning capacity, oxygen consumption, and cardiovascular
endurance, but it allows you to lose weight (from fat, not
muscle!) as well.
Zone 3 is
centered on both aerobic and anaerobic development. It is
at this level that you can increase your capacity for
anaerobic training, improve your lactate tolerance, break through
plateaus, and improve your mental toughness. Training in zone 3
allows you to begin seeing improvements in your
athletic performance.
Zones 4-5
consist of your Anaerobic Threshold (AT) and VO2 max.
Zone 4 is when you reach your AT, the point at which your body cannot
use oxygen as rapidly as it is needed. Your AT is also
where your body stops burning calories from fat and begins burning
calories from carbohydrates, a less efficient fuel
source. Zone 5 is your VO2 max, the point at
which the amount of oxygen you inhale equals the amount of carbon
dioxide you exhale, meaning your cells can no longer take in any
oxygen. Periodic training in zones 4 and 5 is
commonly reserved for performance athletes hoping to increase their
speed and power.
Knowing these
zones and the heart rate in which you enter them will allow you
to exercise at the intensity level that corresponds with your
specific fitness and wellness goals. By training smarter, and
not harder, you can ensure that the valuable time and effort you
spend exercising are not wasted and lead to the results you desire.
Combining
Your Results
Participating in
both an RMR and EMR assessment will allow you to construct a
customized, comprehensive fitness plan. Your RMR
assessment will reveal your body's caloric needs for a customized
nutrition plan, giving you all the energy you need to train in
the efficiency zones created by your EMR assessment. By
training smarter and supplying your body with the correct amount of
nutrients that it needs, you will begin to feel better, lose weight,
and increase your athletic abilities, leading to a healthier, happier
you!
A Lifetime Of
Success!
Reassessments
After incorporating the
results from your initial assessment(s) into your daily lifestyle,
chances are that you have noticed an increase in your cardiovascular
ability and strength, a reduction of body fat and overall
weight, and an improvement in your overall body
composition. It is also likely that you have begun to
notice that your workouts feel a little easier
than before. That is because our bodies adapt to changes
and increases in physical activity. To reveal your progress and
these specific changes, Trekman suggests enrolling for periodic
reassessments.
By scheduling
a metabolic reassessment, you will be able to see exactly how
you've improved, and you can make the needed updates to your
nutrition and exercise program, based on those developments.
Here are some general guidelines as to when you should schedule your
first reassessment:
- Beginners (new to exercise): After 6
weeks
- Fitness Enthusiasts: After 12 weeks
- Performance Athletes: After 6 and 12 weeks
(EMR specifically)
- Injury Recovery: Determined by physician
Achieving
wellness is a lifetime ambition, and by continually updating your
fitness program, you can make sure you reach that end in the
most healthy way possible.

will teach you how to you to view your
Metabolic Profile and navigate the website's easy to use
interface. The eNewLeaf website will play a large role as you
make your way down the path towards success.
eNewLeaf is more than just a way for you to access the
results of your metabolic assessment, it is your online
"training partner." Using the eNewLeaf portal, you
can:
- Create
your own personal profile, including height, weight, age, body
fat percentage, BMI, and lean body mass.
- Create
weight loss or performance goals based off of your RMR and/or
EMR assessment results.
- Enter
and track the number of calories you consume each day.
- Customize
cardiovascular exercise programs around your Metabolic Profile,
ensuring that you are training at the most efficient level,
burning more calories from fat, and less calories
from carbohydrates.
- Implement
a personalized muscle strengthening regimen, allowing you
increase your overall fitness level.
- Keep
track of important aspects of each exercise session (calories
burned, heart rate, time, miles ran, etc.)
- Chart your
progress and see your success!
Monitoring
Your Heart Rate
To
take full advantage of your metabolic assessment and the eNewLeaf
portal, it is suggested that you use a heart rate monitor during
exercise. Because each of your efficient training zones are
identified by a specific heart rate, measuring and keeping track
of that number is the most effective way to ensure that you are
exercising at the correct intensity level to achieve your wellness
goals.
There are a wide
variety of heart rate products that are compatible
with the eNewLeaf website, including devices from Garmin®,
Polar®, LeMond®, and CycleOps®.
Although many different monitors can be used on the eNewLeaf portal,
Trekman suggests a device from either Garmin® or Polar®.
The following products manufactured by these two
companies contain software that will allow you to directly
transfer all of your workout information on to the eNewLeaf
website:
- Garmin® FR60
- Garmin Forerunner® 305 or 405
- Polar® devices with
access to Polar Personal Trainer
